On balance, W126 is my favourite (particularly the coupé) with one exception. Think my order of preference is: W124 500E, C126, C124, W126, W124, W140, C140. There is no easy answer to a question like this. A W126 can come with harder to maintain 5 liter V8 or the same 3 liter engine available for a W124.

A W140 S is a few inches shorter than a W126 S (205 inches vs about 208 inches). They're about 3 inches wider, at LEAST, and are as slab-sided as a car can be. This is what makes them look so huge (and they are) compared to a W126. IMHO, the W140 is an overgrown and somewhat complex W124.

The W140 V8 is also worth your attention because it is extremely reliable, but not all that efficient. The V6 found in the W211 is also a fairly reliable engine and so is the 2.0d found in the W123, W124, and the W190. That key is a big plus. W124 was the last generation using conventional non-electronic no chip key technology. The laser etching is hard to pick and still affordable. W140 is much higher end model, it is bigger, more comfortable and has more gadgets. W124 less complicated, has less gadgets, but it is very reliable and practical. W140 is more parade and weekends car, while W124 is more practical for daily use. For daily use I would go for W210 - before face lift, E320 with inline six engine.

The W140 is like spending your day in the most comfortable chair in your living room. Driving the W126 on a 24 hour blast was hard on this old man. More the time than the car itself. The feel was solid and a little less sporty than the w124. Great for roominess in comparison to the tighter confines of the w124.

The W124 on the other hand, being essentially a scaled up W201 [ 190] chassis makes-do with deep chassis rails, a cross member and Macpherson struts to feed loads into the car's main body structure. This gives a more agile feel to the W124 with a slightly lighter front end perhaps at the expense of insulation from the road.

The W124 has that to an even greater extent. For one, it's noticeably heavier which contributes to this feeling of solidity. But IMO the W201 never had quite the engines that the W124 came with. The two to go for are obviously either the turbo-charged 300D or the absolutely perfect straight-six petrol E320.

According to Wiki, W140 S500 and W1140 500E/E500 both use the same 5.0 version of the M119 engine, so I am curious to see what are the difference between the two if any in term of horsepower, layout, and etc! Assuming we're talking about 1992-1995 only. they had different exhaust manifolds, oil pan/sump, and oil pump location. Same power output.

The W140 leather, wood grain , sound deadening and ride quality are the best of them all. However, the W 140 has a lot more electrical systems and things that can go wrong as compared to the W124 or W202. The steering is a hybrid steering box and rack system, the transmission is a newer design and it is easier to troubleshoot than the W124.
